2018 GRUNER VELTLINER, Terrassen, Brundlmayer. Kamptal, Austria Organic
Alcohol Percentage: 12.5%
Area: Bründlmayer are based in Kampal, the coolest Austrian region. The local town is Langenlois, and their most renowned vineyard is the Zöbinger Heiligenstein, standing high above the river Kamp, facing both north-south and west-east (as the river curves). The soil is 250 million-year-old desert sandstone. This 'Terrassen' cuvée is from young vines on the slope.
Grape Variety: Grüner can be light and spritzy or rich and Bugundian; this is between the two - fresh, mineral-focused, lively but intense.
Producer: Willi Bründlmayer has long been the leading producer in the Kamptal region. They have 75 hectares, mostly running along the Danube. The vineyards have been certified as organic since 2015.
The business is now managed by the dynamic young MW Andreas Wickhoff.
Old Bridge Rating: An example of why Grüner will surely, in the end, rise to international popularity; so delicious and so interesting at the same time.
Press Reviews: "This vintage is the first certified organic from top winemaker Willi Bründlmayer. It's a blend of fruit from terraced sites in Kamptal, giving both expressive citrus and tropical-edged flavours. Concentrated and well-made with refreshing acidity and a long finish". Decanter Magazine September 2019. 92/100.
