2018 LOURO DO BOLO, Rafael Palacios. Valdeorras, Spain Organic
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: Valdeorras (valley of gold) is in Galicia in north west Spain, the cool-ish, green region from where so many of the best Iberian whites hail. It's about 100km inland and is blessed with local grape varieties that are proving to be world-class.
Grape Variety: Godello and Treixadura fermented and matured (for 4 months, on the lees) in very large, old oak casks.
Producer: Rafael Palacios is part of one of Spain’s most admired winemaking families - his family's business was established in Rioja and his brother Alvaro is now a renowned producer in Priorat and Bierzo. Rafael is one of the pioneering quality producers in Valdeorras, working mainly with Godello on sandy /granite soils and terraced vineyards. He buys from around 20 small plots around the region.
Old Bridge Rating: Godello is possibly Spain's best grape (despite all the fuss about Albarino). Come and find out why.
Press Reviews: "Almost water white. Clean, fruity with some fermentation aromas still but a wonderful undertow of structure and finesse. Great attack. Coincidentally this was the white wine served later that day at the Financial Times ‘Business of Luxury Summit’ gala dinner at the Madrid Casino." - Jancis Robinson, writing in April 2019.
