2020 Temporarily out of stock: MUSCADET, Sur Lie, Moulin Camus. Sèvre et Maine, Loire

Bin:  80

Alcohol percentage:  12%

Area:

Muscadet is at the western edge of the Loire Valley in northern France. Sèvre et Maine is the key sub-region.
In the 90s it saw a huge downturn in popularity, primarily because it’s lean, dry, often austere profile was out of synch with the richer styles becoming popular at the time. As tastes have changed, and Muscadet producers have learnt how to put just a little ‘charm’ into their wines, Muscadet is now on the verge of becoming (almost) trendy again.

Grape variety:

Melon de Bourgogne.

Producer:

François Boulanger heads-up a family domaine that controls some 45-hectares, 25 hectares of which are classified as Muscadet.

Old Bridge rating:

To quote Richard Kelley MW, the agent for this wine and Loire specialist:
“If there’s one thing you’re going to hear us banging-on about, it’s the growing renaissance in Muscadet. The region has just enjoyed its best vintage since 1989. Those with very long memories say 1947. The cellars are full of exceptional, ripe, dry mineral wines and available at one-third of the Euro cost price of Sancerre. This, plus the growing recognition for the new cru system which is starting to take shape, we should all be enforcing the message that this much-maligned appellation is back on the map.”
