2016 MAESTRO, DeMorgenzon. Stellenbosch, South Africa
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: Stellenbosch has long been the Cape's premium wine region. Now challenged by warm climate Swartland and cool climate coastal regions like Elgin, it can still produce top quality bottles and is perhaps working ever harder to do so.
Grape Variety: 32% Roussanne, 23% Chardonnay, 23% Chenin Blanc, 15% Viognier, 7% Grenache Blanc; fermented and then matured for 8 months in a mixture of French oak and concrete 'eggs'.
Producer: De Morgenzon means 'morning sun'; it is owned by the Applebaum family and has achieved huge recognition for its wines in the last 10 years. Winemaker (and winery manager) is the ultra-talented Carl van der Merwe.
Old Bridge Rating: Rich, exotic, rather exciting example of a white 'Cape blend'. It's much easier to sell single varietals, but these styles are often more exciting.
Press Reviews: 94 points in Tim Atkin MW's South Africa Report 2018.
