SAVOURY / EARTHY REDS

Savoury / earthy reds - LE P’TIT PAPE, P’tit Paysan. San Benito County, California

2015 LE P’TIT PAPE, P’tit Paysan. San Benito County, California

Bin: 660
Alcohol Percentage: 13.5%
Grape Variety: 62% Grenache, 19% Syrah, 14% Mourvèdre, 3% Counoise and 2% Cinsault; matured for 11 months in previously used French oak barrels.
Producer: Le P'tit Paysan are one of very few wineries in Monterey County (south of San Francisco) trying hard to make really interesting wines. It's normally a source for a lot of 'bulk'.
This apparently comes a limestone and granite based vineyards in five sites in Monterey, San Benito and Santa Clara counties.
Winemaker is Ian Brand, who also makes wine under the La Marea label, and is backed by John Allen of Coastview Vineyard in Monterey. He trained with Bonny Doon Vineyard, one of the first really interesting wineries in the area.
Old Bridge Rating: An obvious homage to Châteauneuf du Pape in both name and grape varieties, but the style is a little lighter, softer and 'easier' than that. Entirely delicious.

THIS WINE DOES CONTAIN QUITE A LOT OF VISIBLE SEDIMENT. HARMLESS, OF COURSE, BUT DON'T ORDER IT IF THIS WILL BE OF CONCERN.
Press Reviews: "Pairs elegant fruit with a zesty sense of gaminess, accented by dried cherry, smoky dried herb and subtle leather hints that take on richness toward the refined tannins. Drink now through 2024. 1,580 cases made. –TF"
