2017 GRENACHE NOIR, The Foundry. Stellenbosch, South Africa
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: This comes from a small (1 hectare vineyard) at Fijndraai in Stellenbosch on heavily decomposed granite soils, just 4 km from the sea.
Grape Variety: 100% Grenache, 30% whole-bunch fermented, matured for 11 months in old oak and tank.
Producer: Chris Williams has been for many years the winemaker at the famous Meerlust winery. As a part-time business he has run, since 2001, his own boutique label 'The Foundry', leasing vineyards of Grenache and Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Syrah. He is a thoughtful and experimental winemaker.
Old Bridge Rating: Bright, lively, excitingly fresh interpretation of the key Côtes du Rhône grape.
Press Reviews: "A captivating nose with a hint of smoky reduction before pomegranate, black berries, lavender, pepper and other spice. The palate shows great fruit density, fresh acidity and nicely grippy tannins. This comes across as particularly athletic – depth and power (alcohol: 14%) without sacrificing energy. Super stuff" - winemag.co.za, 95/100.
