2015 CHARMES DE KIRWAN. Margaux, Bordeaux (Magnum)

Bin:  870

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Margaux, a commune within the Haut-Médoc, is renowned for producing Bordeaux’s most elegant and graceful wines. Kirwan is a 37 hectare vineyard on the plateau of Cantenac, one of the highest points of the area (which is of course generally very flat, sloping gently down to the Gironde estuary).

Grape variety:

41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, matured for 16 months in 225 litre French oak barrels (15% new wood).

Producer:

Kirwan is a ‘Third Growth’ in the 1855 classification. It’s owned by the négociant firm, Schröder and Schÿler, and is now producing really fine wine, having been an ‘under-performer’ for most of the last century.
As their website puts it: “Charmes de Kirwan, the second estate wine, was introduced in 1993. The younger sibling of the wines of Château Kirwan, Charmes de Kirwan generally comes from the harvest of the vineyard’s younger vines, but it receives the same attention as the great growth.”

Old Bridge rating:

Young, of course, but this has the hedonistic richness of the 2015 vintage and is relatively good value by the standards of serious claret!
