Savoury / earthy reds - BAROLO, Riva Rocca, Claudio Alario. Piedmont, Italy

2013 BAROLO, Riva Rocca, Claudio Alario. Piedmont, Italy

Bin: 672
Alcohol Percentage: 14.5%
Area: Riva Rocca is a vineyard with the Verduno village sub-region of the Barolo appellation.
Barolo is of course the great appellation in the Langhe Hills, near Alba in north west Italy, where the long autumns famously manage (in the best years) to slowly but eventually ripen the notoriously difficult Nebbiolo grape.
Grape Variety: 100% Nebbiolo matured for 2 years in small French oak barrel and a further year in large old casks.
Producer: Alario, now run by father Claudio and son Matteo, have just 12 hectares in total and are based in Diano D'Alba (from where they make excellent Dolcetto).
Old Bridge Rating: A relatively modern style that can feel too oaky and 'shiny' when young. But give it just 5 years and the savoury complexity really shows. This is a relative bargain for a fine Barolo - prices in the region have gone mad.
