2013 SANGIOVESE, Seghesio. Alexander Valley, California
Alcohol Percentage: 14.8%
Area: Seghesio are based in Healdsburg, Sonoma Valley. Their Zinfandel comes from Home Ranch and Rattlesnake Hill in in Alexander Valley.
Grape Variety: 100% Sangioves, matured for 15 months in French oak, of which 20% was new wood.
Producer: For decades the Seghesio family, like many Italian immigrants, simply grew grapes for sale to other wineries. The switch to winemaking was a huge success. They specialize in Zinfandel and a host of rarely seen Italian varieties. Zinfandel grows like a weed in warm climates, so aggressive 'canopy management' is required to tame it. Their grape-growing expertise is perhaps the secret to Seghesio's success.
They sold the family business to 'Crimson Wine Group' in 2011, but Ted Seghesio is still supervising all the winemaking.
Old Bridge Rating: A luscious and very friendly example of the great Tuscan grape variety.
