2018 Temporarily out of stock: GEWURZTRAMINER, Grigorescu, Jidvei. Transylvania, Târnave, Romania
Alcohol Percentage: 12%
Area: Jidvei is actually the name of the region as well as the winery. It's in the centre of the county, in southern Transylvania, part of the Tarnave plateau. The area has a winemaking history going back 700 years.
Producer: The Jidvei winery was established as an industrial winemaking facility in the 1950s, and privatised in 1999 after the end of communism. It's now one of the biggest and most modern producers in the country, making local styles like Feteasca Alba as well as international grape varieties. Gewürztraminer has actually been planted locally for centuries - brought by Saxon colonists that settled throughout Transylvania. Wine tasting sessions are organized in the beautifully restored Bethlen Castle nearby Jidvei, built in the 16th century.
Old Bridge Rating: Gewurztraminer is of course the most idiosyncratic, floral, exotic of grape varieties - very much a marmite style. This is actually quite a gentle example, softly aromatic and light with a hint of sweetness.
Press Reviews: "This semisweet wine has a flowery bouquet of jasmine and citrus blossom. The florality continues to the palate, combining with flavors of pineapple, ginger and apricot before a slightly sweet finish." WineEnthusiast.Com
