Savoury / earthy reds - NERO D’AVOLA, Coriole, McLaren Vale, Australia

2017 NERO, Coriole. McLaren Vale, Australia

Bin: 555
Alcohol Percentage: 13.9%
Area: McLaren Vale is just along the coast from Adelaide. Although less historically important, it rivals the Barossa Valley for production of the very best, richest and most hedonistic of Aussie reds, particularly Shiraz of course.
Grape Variety: 100% Nero D'Avola; hand-picked, de-stemmed, cold soaked for 4 days, fermented cool, briefly aged in old oak and bottled after 6 months.
Producer: From the Coriole website:
"The Chaffeys road estate was purchased in 1967 by Hugh and Molly Lloyd and a small collective of friends naming it 'Coriole', which began as 12 acres under vines with the original Shiraz vineyard planted immediately after the first world war in 1919. Hugh and Molly became sole owners of Coriole in 1969 and released the first Coriole vintage 'Claret'. The Lloyd family continues to manage and develop the Coriole estate with the third generation now at the helm.
After over a decade of success with traditional varieties, Mark Lloyd made the move to alternative varieties with one of the first Australian plantings of Sangiovese. The 2016 release was Coriole's 30th vintage of this wine. This motivation has continued as many other varieties and new clones have been tried and tested."
They have farmed organically for years and are now working towards full certification.
Old Bridge Rating: A brilliant rendition of Sicily's key red grape. Has all the power and flesh of the 'original' style but with more aromatic lift and suppleness.
