2017 CHARDONNAY, Lower Duivenhoks River, Richard Kershaw. S. Africa

Bin:  244

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Richard is based in Elgin, a genuinely cool, coastal region, east of Cape Town, between Stellenbosch and Walker Bay. Prior to the introduction of grape growing by the Cluver family it was almost exclusively an apple production region.
This wine, one of his GPS series, actually comes from a single vineyard further east, just 5 miles from the ocean, with pure limestone soils.

Grape variety:

100% Chardonnay; natural yeasts; 11 months in French oak (40% new wood).

Producer:

Richard Kershaw, an English Master of Wine, was originally a Chef then a winemaker, eventually in charge at Mulderbosch and Kanu wineries, before starting his own project.

Old Bridge rating:

Cool climate new world Chardonnay of real finesse. Drink from 2021.

Press review:

“”The 2017 GPS Chardonnay has a killer bouquet, just like the 2016, the mineral-rich aromatics soaring from the glass with fantastic delineation that actually reminds me of Domaine Leflaive. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and a little more saline than the previous vintage, although maybe not quite as persistent. Still, this is an outstanding Chardonnay from Kershaw and it will give 12 to 15 years of drinking pleasure. – Neal Martin”
