2020 Now finished: ETNA ROSSO, Guardoilvento, Pietro Caciaorgna. Sicily

Bin:  658

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Producer:

A good summary by the American agents for this wine:
“Pietro Caciorgna has amassed an impressive resumé (current winemaker at Montalcino’s Altesino and La Serena, among others), but it was a small surprise when in 2006 he decided to add to his stable of projects the resurrection of two very old, pre-phylloxera vineyard sites on the northern slopes of Sicily’s Mount Etna. The Guardoilvento vineyard is a north/northeasterly facing site of high-density (8,000 vines/ha) Nerello Mascalese vines on black volcanic ash and sandy soils with high mineral content. The wine is vinified in stainless steel before aging for ten months in used French barrique. Etna is indisputably one of Italy’s most vibrant regions today, and it’s no small thanks to immense talents like Paolo working with stunning vineyard sites like Guardoilvento.”

Maturity potential:

Will get better and better to 2029.

Old Bridge rating:

Smokey, savoury, mineral – totally unique.

Decanter Magazine:
“Exotic fruit cocktail nose with raspberry and passion fruit notes and a touch of cedar. Crunchy wild redcurrants and a creamy blueberry muffin texture [Sorry, what now?] giving a lush mouthfeel. Tannins are high and serious.” 91 points
