2020 GEWÜRZTRAMINER, Meyer Fonné. Alsace, France

Bin:  164

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Alsace is for ever out of fashion. Normal folk think it (and its wines) are German, not French. Wine buffy folk talk about the wines in reverent tones, but rarely drink it.
Maybe the best examples are indeed too much of a good thing, too flavoursome and emphatic, to be everyday quaffers. But for foodie occasions, little can match the bravura intensity of a wine like this.

Producer:

Félix Meyer is the third generation of his family to run this small estate of 15 hectares. They are based in Katzenthal but have vineyards in seven different communes, including five Grand Cru sites. The wines are matured in old wooden foudres and stainless steel. Most are dry but this Gewürz, a blend from various parcels, has around 30 grams of residual sugar, respectively.

Old Bridge rating:

Exotic aromas, luscious richness but ample freshness too.

Food match:

Much more versatile than you would think. Chicken or pork in creamy sauces; strong cheese (particularly Munster from Alsace of course); after dinner sipping.
