2016 Now finished: GRENACHE, Two Vintners. Columbia Valley, Washington State

Bin: 605
Alcohol Percentage: 14.9%
Size of bottle: 75cl
Area: Washington State in the far north east of the US is a strange and unique wine region. All the vineyards are in the semi-desert conditions of the Columbia Vally basin, west of the Cascade Mountains.
Cool nights, poor soils and careful irrigation can make some refined wines, in the right hands.
This wine is made from 2 vineyards in the Yakima Valley (Olsen & Boushey) and Monette's Vineyard in the Rocks District of Walla Walla.
Grape Variety: 85% Grenache, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cinsault; 15% fermented as whole bunches; matured in 'neutral' oak barrels for 15 months.
Producer: The words of James Doidge MW, the UK agent:
"Two Vintners was founded in 2007 in a partnership between aspiring young winemaker, Morgan Lee and the owners of nearby Covington Cellars where he is also winemaker. Morgan is a talented and creative young winemaker taking a low-intervention, small-scale and experimental approach, sourcing grapes from a selection of vineyards across Washington and also Oregon.
Morgan’s wine journey began at a wine appreciation class at university, on which he enrolled partly because it allowed drinking in class on a Monday night. This inspired an experimental interest in fermentation and making wines in his basement. A harvest internship while taking a semester out from training for a culinary career led to a change in direction, a move from Michigan to Washington and the birth of Two Vintners. In 2007, Syrah and Merlot were the pariahs of the wine industry and perhaps not that much has changed since then. Morgan always believed these were the grapes with the best expression in Washington State and on the evidence of his wines it’s hard to deny."
Old Bridge Rating: The breadth and spice of a classic Grenache from the southern Rhône, but with even more richness of fruit. This is perhaps what most Châteauneuf drinkers really want when they order their French classics.
