2020 CHARDONNAY, Molu, Kalfu. Casablanca, Chile
Alcohol Percentage: 13.5%
Size of bottle: 75cl
Area: Casablanca Valley was Chile's first cool-climate area, close to the south Pacific coastline, making its name for crisp and elegant Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Chardonnays have a rare zingy freshness, very different to the classic (old-fashioned) style of new world examples.
Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay, fermented cool and matured for 6 months on its lees, a small proportion (15%) in oak barrels.
Producer: Kalfu is a range of wines made by the dynamic Ventisquero Wine Estates - they have bought vineyards in some of the most exciting areas in Chile, often planted only recently - Leyda Valley, Casablanca Valley, Colchagua Valley and the inhospitable Atacama Desert.
Old Bridge Rating: Very tropical, juicy fruit. A ripeness born of the sunshine but a super-brightness also indicative of the relatively cool climate. The oak isn't dominant at all, this is a lovely, easy style of Chardonnay for drinking on its own.
