2020 FRAPPATO, Valle Dell’Acate. Sicily, Italy Organic
Alcohol Percentage: 13.5%
Size of bottle: 75cl
Area: Valle dell’Acate are located in south east Sicily, in the province of Ragusa. Despite being a warm region, like all of Sicily, it's renowned for producing wines of brightness and freshness. The best known is Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Sicily's only 'DOCG' - which is a blend of Nero D'Avola and Frappato. Producers also make single variety wines, like this one.
Producer: Family owned for six generations and since 2000 run by Gaetana Jacono who has been responsible for the winery's renown. She has re-planted almost all of the estate's 100 hectares. She is also the brand ambassador for the wines of Cerasuolo di Vittoria and led the producer group when I visited the area on a Master of Wien trip a few years ago.
Food Match: Frappato is rather like Gamay - bright, fresh and Gamay, but with a clearly Italian twist, a spicy, black cherry edge.
