MALVASIA RESERVA, Barbeito. Madeira (50cl bottle)
Bin: 952
Alcohol percentage: 19%
The famous Portuguese island, long neglected by the drinking public but still the source of some of the best value and longest-lived wines in the world. The grapes for this come from vineyards in Arco de São Jorge.
Malvasia matured in French oak barrels for 5 years, in the fluctuating temperature of the roof of the warehouse (the traditional Canteiro method).
Founded in 1946 and still family owned. They were the first Madeira company to switch away from bulk wine to only bottled in 1993. They also don’t add caramel, so colours are always much lighter than the norm.
Great packaging and simply delicious wine – it’s time for Madeira to brush off its fuddy-duddy image. This is a great pick-me-up at whatever time of day such a thing might be required.
