2019 LES HAUTS DE SMITH. Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux

Bin:  517

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Smith Haut Lafitte is a 55 hectare estate in Pessac (the best, northern part of the Graves region, and just south of the city of Bordeaux). They are on a gravelly rise, just next to Haut-Bailly. Owned since 1990 by Daniel and Florence Cathiard, who have gradually turned it into one of the most sought-after wines in the region. No expense has been spared, including the creation of a luxury hotel and spa, home to the skincare brand of Caudalie.

Grape variety:

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured for 15 months in oak barrels (20% new wood).

Old Bridge rating:

This is very fine indeed for a ‘second wine’. Proving both the success of the vintage and the brilliance of the SHL team.

Press review:

“Majority Merlot (with the remainder Cabernet Sauvignon), with a gourmet edge of blackberry fruits, chocolate and caramel hints. This is a vintage that really suits Merlot and so suits the style of Merlot dominant Les Hauts de Smith. Soft tannins that are fleshy and easy to love. Aged in 20% new oak. Drink 2024-2030.” Jane Anson, Decanter.
