Now finished: PLEIADES XXIX, Sean Thackrey. California

Bin:  581

Alcohol percentage:  14.4%

Area:

This is unusual for a wine of this quality. A blend of vineyards and blend of vintages. And unlike most serious wines made from multiple years (think non-vintage Champagne) Thackrey is not aiming for consistency – the blend and the style vary year by year.

Producer:

Sean Thackrey sadly passed away in 2022. This is one of the final few wines he made.

To quote his back label:

“The object of Pleiades Old Vines is to be delicious, delight the jaded, irritate the Wine Police, and go well with anything red wine goes well with.

We produce premium single sourced varietal wines, then age them individually before blending into the final composition. Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Carignane, Pinot Noir, Viognier, and Petite Sirah all play a role in this performance.

Fragrant and voluptuous when first released, it will become far more subtle and complex with a year or two of bottle age, although such restraint might be too much to ask of most of us.”

Old Bridge rating:

Ripe, of course, but endlessly interesting – flavours and aromas quite like no other wine you will have tasted.
