2021 Now finished: SANCERRE, Domaine Sautereau. Loire Valley (Half Bottle)

Bin:  811

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Sancerre remains the most famous appellation in France for Sauvignon Blanc, and holds both its reputation and sales despite the rise of New Zealand and many other cool climate new world offerings.
The key here is the chalky soil (similar to Chablis), the cool but sunny climate and a heritage of doing a great job for many decades. The only problem is that prices from many producers is now way over the top (over £30 is common).

Grape variety:

100% Sauvignon Blanc, fermented cool in stainless steel and bottled after 6-8 months.

Producer:

UK agent Liberty wines:
“The Domaine’s 22 hectares of vineyard are situated mainly in Crézancy, with a tiny proportion located in Bué and the village of Sancerre itself. The range of soils in this area, many of which are predominantly calcerous, allows David a good spread of different blending components for the wine, giving more complex and varied flavours.”

Old Bridge rating:

Grassy and stony; a very clearly French style of Sauvignon Blanc!
