2008 BAROLO, Parussi, Massolino. Piedmont
Alcohol Percentage: 14.5%
Area: Alba is the main wine town of Piedmont, home of both the revered white truffle and the great wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. This wine comes specifically from the Parussi vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, one of the key villages/sub-zones within the region, at an altitude of 300 m. Nebbiolo is very sensitive to microclimate and this is an ideal altitude for frost protection and is shielded from northern winds by the Castelletto hills.
Grape Variety: 100% Nebbiolo, aged in very large, old, oak casks, for 30 months.
Producer: Franco Massolino makes both old-school and modern wines, but this is classic, traditional Barolo, with long maceration and oak ageing. Only the best Nebbiolo grapes can take this type of vinification.
Cellar Potential: 2018 - 2028.
Food Match: Barolo needs the right food. Slow-braised red meat the obvious option.
Old Bridge Rating: Top-quality traditional Barolo. Not deep in colour, not rich in fruit; it's all about perfume, elegance and under-stated substance. Decant an hour in advance.
Press Reviews: "Very closed on the nose. Same compactness and stubbornness on the palate but with great palate weight and fine muscular tannin. Sweet, muscular finish, with a fine fragrance. And with almost completely integrated acidity. 17/20" (Walter Speller on JancisRobinson.Com in 2012).
