2014 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO, San Polo. Tuscany, Italy
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: Montalcino is a hill-top town in the warm, open country in southern Tuscany, about 45 minutes down from Siena. Although the key grape is the same as for Chianti Classico further north, the style is broader and generally richer. San Polo are in the south east of the region, not far from the famous abbey at Sant'Antimo. They have 22 hectares in total.
Grape Variety: 100% Sangiovese, aged for two years in new French oak 'barriques'.
Producer: The estate was bought by the Allegrini family (of Valpolicella) in 2006.
Cellar Potential: 2019 - 2024. At its best from 2020.
Old Bridge Rating: Full, powerful but rounded expression of Sangiovese. By Montalcino standards, however, this is rather elegant.
