2016 Château Les Cruzelles, Lalande de Pomerol

Bin:  518

Alcohol percentage:  13.5%

Area:

Lalande de Pomerol is an important satellite district to Pomerol itself, on the “right bank” of Bordeaux. Amongst its numerous estates Château les Cruzelles is broadly considered to be the finest – and of commensurate quality to many more famous names in Pomerol itself.

Grape variety:

90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc

Producer:

This 11 hectare estate was the personal project of the late, great, Denis Durantou of Château l’Eglise-Clinet – one of Pomerol’s greatest growths. He bought the property in 2000 and set about transforming both the vineyards and wines. Cruzelle’s vineyard is so close you can see the vineyards of l’Egise-Clinet from it. The vineyards have the similar famed clay and gravel soils. They are planted with 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc.

Vintage:

This has bright black plum and cherry fruit notes – with a touch of bramble and spice – the tannins are ripe and there is a lovely smooth texture. This drinks well above its station.

2016 was a fabulous vintage in Bordeaux making rich and fruity red wines with plenty of freshness, texture, and balance.

Maturity potential:

This is right in its drinking window now, but capable of aging nicely over the next 5 years too.

You can decant and give it an hour’s airing before enjoying.
