2022 CORRALILLO RIESLING, Matetic. Casablanca Valley, Chile.

Bin:  94

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Vegan

Area:

The “Coralillo” range focuses on upfront and pure varietal expression, precisely exampled in their Riesling. The grapes are from the Santo Tomas vineyard, located in the Lagunillas sector of the Casablanca Valley. The vines are planted on soils called “coastal batholith”, made up of granite with quartz and clay.

Producer:

Matetic is a modern company founded by the family in 1999. They were Croatian by origin settling in Chile in 1892, as farmers and landowners. The present (fourth generation) – headed up by President Jorge Matetic – established themselves in the El Rosario Valley in San Antonio, Casablanca – Chile’s leading cool climate winemaking area.

They set out from the start to unitise this cool climate setting and farm organically – now fully converted to biodynamics; and this backdrop comes through in all their wines – both white and red – with a sense of purty, varietal definition, and consistently high quality. Today they are rightly seen as one of Chile’s finest producers.

They first planted 120 hectares which has since grown to 160 in total. Winemaking is overseen by Julio Bastías, with Roberto Pereira in charge of viticulture.

Vintage:

Hand harvested grapes were whole cluster pressed and cold soaked for 24 hours to extract key aromatic elements. Fermented in stainless steel with inoculated yeasts and a stirring of the fine lees for 6 months to increase volume and texture in the mouth

Old Bridge rating:

This is a cool and vibrant New World example of Riesling – with a touch of residual sugar in the background. Bold citric fruit nose and flavours – lime led with a touch of kerosene this is mouthwatering and zesty with great purity and vitality. A perfect summer drink.

Serve chilled. Ready for drinking now and over the next year to 2-3 years whilst at its fresh and vibrant best.
