2015 A MODERN WHITE, Qupé. Central Coast, California
Alcohol Percentage: 13%
Area: Qupé are based in Santa Maria Valley, which is one of the key sub-regions of Santa Barbara County, about half way between San Francisco and Los Angeles (which overall is referred to as the Central Coast). The winery is a big shed in the Bien Nacido vineyard, which is shared with Jim Clendennen of Au Bon Climat.
Grape Variety: Equal parts Viognier and Chardonnay with around 10% Marsanne
Producer: Bob Lindquist of Qupé pioneered Rhone-style wines in California 35 years ago and is still going strong. This is a relatively new wine from him, designed to hit a 'sensible' price point.
Old Bridge Rating: Soft and easy-going, this is great value from a country and region that can make great wine, but (normally) at a high cost.
Press Reviews: "Very peachy nose. Rich and full at the front of the palate, gentle, and the freshness is more from the lightly grainy texture than from acidity. Pear-grained." Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com
