RAINWATER RESERVA, Barbeito. Madeira (50cl bottle)
Alcohol Percentage: 19%
Area: The famous Portuguese island, long neglected by the drinking public but still the source of some of the best value and longest-lived wines in the world. The grapes for this come from Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and São Vicente
Grape Variety: Tinta Negra, fortified and then aged in French oak for 5 years
Producer: Founded in 1946 and still family owned. They were the first Madeira company to switch away from bulk wine to only bottled in 1993. They also don't add caramel, so colours are always much lighter than the norm
Food Match: Ideally an aperitif, served around 'cellar temperature' with cheesey or other salty nibbles
Old Bridge Rating: Great packaging and simply delicious wine - it's time for Madeira to brush off its fuddy-duddy image. This is a great aperitif or a pick-me-up at whatever time of day such a thing might be required
