2015 LE COLOMBARE, Pieropan. Recioto di Soave, Italy (50cl bottle)
Alcohol Percentage: 12.5 %
Size of bottle: 50cl bottle
Area: From Soave in north east Italy, near Verona. Pieropan and a few other estates have transformed the reputation of the region from a source of bulk plonk to an area capable of producing fine, elegant wines.
Grape Variety: 100% Garganega, picked late (part with 'botrytis', about 15%) and then dried on straw mats for 5 months, before ageing in large barrels for 2 years. (130 grammes per litre residual sugar).
Producer: 30 hectare estate founded in 1890. Since 1970 Nino Pieropan has made it one of the most prestigious white wine producers in Italy, famous for immaculate, pure Soave and the richer more intense 'Cru' wines, Calvarino and La Rocca.
Cellar Potential: Already delicious - no real need to keep. But will be absolutely fine for up to 10 years.
Food Match: Rich enough to cope with many puds, but best with something not too sweet, to give the wine the chance to shine. Panacotta with stewed fruit is a classic partner.
Old Bridge Rating: Sweetness, concentration and complexity resulting from top quality grapes with a combination of 'botrytis' and air-drying. Really fascinating flavours - this is cheap for the quality.
