2017 CONDRIEU, De Poncins, Francois Villard. Northern Rhône
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: Condrieu is a tiny appellation, one of the smallest in France, in the northern Rhône. Planted entirely to Viognier, the vineyards produce tiny quantities of perfumed, rich, hedonistic wines - at high prices.
Grape Variety: 100% Viognier, fermented and matured in oak for 11 months, but only a small proportion is new wood.
Producer: Francois Villard's first vintage was 1991. He now makes around 20 wines, the majority white but also reds from Côte Rôtie, Crozes Hermitage and St Joseph. Poncins is his best vineyard.
Cellar Potential: At its peak within 5 years of the vintage; Viognier rarely ages successfully.
Old Bridge Rating: Near-perfect example - full bodied, enticingly perfumed and yet somehow delicate and fine.
