2017 LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT, Quinta de la Rosa. 50cl btl

Bin:  966

Alcohol percentage:  19.5%

Area:

Warm summers and the steep, granitic slopes of the Douro valley make for low yields and some of the ripest, most intense red grapes in the world. Add alcohol half way through fermentation and you get the lusciously sweet but serious and long-lived style of wine we all know as Port.

Grape variety:

Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz.

Producer:

Quinta de la Rosa is run by the indomitable Sophia Bergqvist. The estate was given as a christening present to Sophia’s grandmother in 1906! It was a grape producer for larger houses when Sophia and her father Tim started production themselves.
The style has always been traditional, with foot-treading of the grapes for Port styles (they also make white, rosé and red wines). Their winemaker since 2002 has been the renowned Jorge Moreira.

Old Bridge rating:

Excellent example of a ‘Late Bottled Vintage’ – in other words aged for five years in large wooden barrels, rather than two for Vintage. The time in wood softens the youthful power. LBV Port can be approached when released, but (at its best) retains more than a hint of Vintage Port, unlike the longer aged (Tawny) wines.

Food match:

Great all round red for a cheeseboard. Fruit and intensity to match almost any style, except perhaps goats’.
