2015 FIELD BLEND, Sidebar. Russian River Valley, California
Alcohol Percentage: 14.5%
Area: The Russian River is a beautiful (your ideal vision of 'natural' California wine country) sub-region of Sonoma County. It's cool enough to produce many of the state's best Chardonnays and Pinots. Zinfandel and Cabernet from here tends to be much more elegant than from other parts of Sonoma (or Napa).
Grape Variety: A 'field blend' made up of 78% Zinfandel, 10% Alicante Bouschet, 10% Petite Sirah and a 2% composite of Sangiovese, Carignane, Trousseau, Petite Bouschet, Syrah, Beclan, Tannat, Peloursin, Graciano, Plavac Mali, Palomino and Monbadon!
Producer: David Ramey is an urbane and sophisticated man. Previously winemaker at top names like Chalk Hill, Dominus and Matanzas Creek, he now has his own operation making top quality Chardonnay, Pinot and Cabernet.
Sidebar is his 'second label' allowing him to experiment with grapes and styles that he has not been known for before.
Old Bridge Rating: Generous and open, but also juicy and fresh. Designed to be drunk young, but certainly capable of ageing. Delicious - and not a crazy price for a Russian River red from a prestigious producer.
Press Reviews: "Fun, ripeness, interest and depth. For a Californian wine this is a steal! I think this could have been marketed as something more special at a higher price actually. It’s history, innit?" Jancis Robinson, June 2018
