Full-bodied whites (under £15) - 2012 BERGERAC BLANC, Clos des Verdots. SW France

2014 Now finished: BERGERAC BLANC, Tour des Verdots. SW France

Bin: 270
Alcohol Percentage: 13.5%
Area: Bergerac is inland from Bordeaux and, whilst well-known for its charms as a tourism venue, has always been the poor relation in wine terms. The reds are made of the Bordeaux grapes (mostly Cabernet and Merlot) and, like most inexpensive clarets, veer too often to the dry and stalky. The whites, however, have now shaken that image off, with many fresh Sauvignon blends surpassing those from Bordeaux
Grape Variety: 25% Sauvignon Blanc, 23% Sauvignon Gris, 44% Semillon, 8% Muscadelle; given gentle oak-ageing
Producer: David Fourtout is the fourth generation of his family to run this estate. He has 23 hectares of white grapes and 22 of red. He is not completely organic (very tricky in the relatively humid conditions here) but does practise 'lutte raisonnée' - a sustainable approach to farming which minimises chemical treatments.
Old Bridge Rating: One of the lightest wine in the full-bodied section, but it does have much more weight and richness than a standard white Bordeaux Sauvignon. Quite excellent value
