2004 CHARLES HEIDSIECK, Blanc des Millénaires. Champagne
Alcohol Percentage: 12.5%
Area: Based in Reims, Charles Heidsieck own (or buy grapes from) 120 different vineyards. Unlike most areas, it is the blending of different 'terroirs' that is invariably the key to top quality Champagne
Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay, bottled matured 'on its lees' for 15 years before release
Producer: Charles Heidsieck have had a mixed history but for the last 15 years have been making outstanding wines. Since 2002 Regis Camus has been head winemaker. One of the house's remarkable features is that it releases its wines fully mature - this is the current vintage of its "prestige" wine, whilst most houses are on 2004!
Cellar Potential: Can be kept until 2025 if cellared carefully, but fully mature already.
Old Bridge Rating: Of course the price is crazy, but compared to the young and over-hyped offerings of most houses, this looks relatively good value! And it's certainly a brilliant wine, whatever the price.
Press Reviews: "This 2004 constitutes only the fifth edition of this special bottling that has earned an outstanding reputation, coming after 1983, 1985, 1990 and the superlative 1995. The Chardonnay for this blanc de blancs comes from the five famous terroirs of the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Cramant, Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Vertus. It has powerful aromatic complexity with minty, floral and mineral elements, while the dense, generous yet silky texture is supported by finely-judged acidity. This is a character-driven Champagne that should pair well with a poultry dish based on a creamy sauce." 95/100 - Decanter Magazine
