2017 LES CONTOURS DE DEPONCINS, François Villard. Rhône
Alcohol Percentage: 12.5%
Area: These are vines from the village of Condrieu itself, a tiny appellation, one of the smallest in France, in the northern Rhône. Planted entirely to Viognier, the vineyards produce tiny quantities of perfumed, rich, hedonistic wines - at high prices.
Grape Variety: 100% Viognier. Villard ferment and mature their Viognier in oak, but only a small proportion is new. This is from vines in the village but not on the specific slopes authorised for Condrieu itself.
Producer: Francois Villard, chef turned winemaker (in 1989), has just 12 hectares of Viognier vines in and around Condrieu.
Food Match: For many Viognier can only be an aperitif, its perfume overwhelming many dishes. But it's also brilliant with spiced or cured flavours, especially in 'nibble' format.
Old Bridge Rating: From young vines of a top estate in the revered village of Condrieu, next to Côte Rôtie, in the northern Rhône Valley. Peach and apricot; rounded but delicate. It's classic Viognier at half the price of a Condrieu, but much more than half as good.
Press Reviews: "This might sound a high price for a lowly appellation, but it is better than most Condrieu – and if it had that magic word written on the label you would pay an awful lot more for it." Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph
