2014 ECLIPSE, Drew Noon. McLaren Vale, South Australia
Alcohol Percentage: 15.5%
Area: McLaren Vale is home to Australia's juiciest, ripest, most open-hearted Shiraz. Noon is based in Southern Vales, south of Adelaide. His Grenache is from 70 year old bush vines on the estate. The Shiraz and Cabernet come from Langhorne Creek, about 45 minutes away
Grape Variety: Around 85% Grenache, with 8% Shiraz and a little of the Spanish grape Graciano; aged in French and American oak (20% new) for 16 months
Producer: Drew Noon (Master of Wine, one of very few in Australia) makes just 3,000 cases a year and little comes to the UK.
Cellar Potential: 2018-2028
Food Match: Decant in advance and drink with big, spicy food - Drew recommends chorizo sausages
Old Bridge Rating: Huge richness and alcohol, yet soft and graceful overall
Press Reviews: ""Since 2012, Eclipse has been produced exclusively from estate-grown McLaren Vale fruit. The 2014 Eclipse is a blend of 85% Grenache, 8% Shiraz and 7% Graciano, aged almost entirely in used oak. Aromas of spiced strawberries and raspberries are inviting and complex, hinting at white pepper, cardamom and allspice. It's full-bodied yet seems almost weightless, buoyed by high-toned fruit and bright acids, while fine-grained, silky-textured tannins give shape and focus to the palate and add a savory edge on the long finish." The Wine Advocate - 96/100.
