2017 FRITZ'S RIESLING, Gunderloch. Rheinhessen, Germany
Alcohol Percentage: 11.5%
Area: The Rheinhessen lost its reputation for quality after Niersteiner Gutes Domtal sold its soul in the seventies. A pity, the best sites produce fine Riesling with a touch more softness (hence user-friendliness) than the Mosel or Rheingau.
Grape Variety: 100% Riesling.
Producer: Gunderloch, run by Fritz Hasselbach, is an outstanding estate based in Nackenheim.
Food Match: Doesn't need food at all but its grapey softness is a calming antidote to a Thai chicken curry.
Old Bridge Rating: Off-dry Riesling from a top German estate. Fritz Hasselbach's eponymous, light, spritzy, easy-drinking, off-dry 'starter' wine. Modern packaging and perfect balance helps bring a retro style back into vogue.
