2011 GAIA, Grosset. Clare Valley, Australia

Bin:  520

Alcohol percentage:  13.7%

Vegan

Area:

“Gaia is one of the most astonishing vineyards you’ll see. Planted at 570 metres, at the highest point of the Clare Valley, the vineyard is an elongated triangular wedge of emerald green that sits above the rolling golden cornfields of the Clare Valley. Named after James Lovelock’s books, Gaia is a metaphor for the importance of the diversity and complexity of species.” Anthony Rose, The Independent

Grape variety:

85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc; matured in French oak (half new oak)

Producer:

Jeffrey Grosset established his winery in 1981 and now has an international reputation, in particular as the finest producer of Riesling in the ‘new world’. However his other wines should not be overlooked!

Old Bridge rating:

Unusually for an Australian red, this is all about freshness, elegance and longevity. Very ‘Bordeaux’ in style.

Press review:

“With crunchy blackcurrants, green capsicum and green bean, this is a tangy, herbal, leafy, capsicumy Gaia, reflecting a cool season yet, vitally, the acidity and tannins are ripe and balanced, carrying the finish long and even. A triumph for 2011.” Tyson Stelzer
