2006 MONTE BELLO, Ridge. California (Magnum)
Alcohol Percentage: 13.5%
Area: Monte Bello is a single homogenous estate high up in the Santa Cruz mountains, south of San Francisco - and one of the most spectacular vineyards in the world. Poor limestone soils and a cool climate make for low yields and intense (but not over-blown) wine. The vineyard is currently being certified as fully organic.
Grape Variety: 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc; aged in new American oak for 17 months
Producer: Paul Draper's Ridge is perhaps the most respected winery in California. Even more so now that the three separate estates (Monte Bello, Geyserville and Lytton Springs) have their own wineries and so operate like a French 'Domaine' rather than a bigger operation
Cellar Potential: At peak from 2015
Old Bridge Rating: JUST ONE BOTTLE LEFT
Press Reviews: "While it is eclipsed by the brilliance of the 2005, the 2006 Monte Bello (68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc) is a very strong effort. Its dense purple color is followed by copious aromas of creme de cassis, licorice, spice box, and a touch of oak. Well-balanced, dense, pure, layered, and rich, its big, rich style is similar to the 2003. This cuvee should keep for 25-30 years in a cool cellar. 94+/100" Robert Parker, Wine Advocate.
