Fresh, dry whites, under £10 - PICPOUL DE PINET, Félines-Jourdan. Languedoc, South of France

2018 PICPOUL DE PINET, Félines-Jourdan. Languedoc, S. France

Bin: 84
Alcohol Percentage: 13.5%
Area: West of the town of Mèze in the Languedoc, South West France - close to the coast about half way between Montpelier and Beziers. This estate is on the edge of the huge Thau lagoon
Grape Variety: 100% Picpoul (or Piquepoul), fermented in stainless steel then kept 'on its lees' for a few months to gain a little extra richness
Producer: Félines-Jourdan are the largest private producer in the area, with 95 hectares of vineyard, much of it Picpoul de Pinet. It is an entirely family run affair, with Claude Jourdan the winemaker and Serge Jourdan the viticulturalist
Cellar Potential: Drink as young as possible, but will hold for 2 years
Food Match: Clean but ripe and nicely 'textured', this is exceedingly food-friendly; fishy pasta dishes would be the perfect choice
Old Bridge Rating: Picpoul has suddenly become trendy - moving from obscurity (or rather a well-kept secret amongst Francophiles, as the crispest, freshest wine of the south) to a staple in city wine bars. This example is a successful mix of sea-salt briskness and gentle charm
Press Reviews: "Picpoul de Pinet is a bit like Muscadet; when it is bad, it is dull and boring, but when it is vinified with talent and care, it is absolutely delicious. Such is the case at Domaine Félines-Jourdan" - Rosemary George MW in her blog about Southern French wines
