2013 SONDRAIA, Poggio al Tesoro. Tuscany, Italy
Bin: 522
Alcohol percentage: 15%
Poggio al Tessoro is a relatively new estate based in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, the area where most of the ‘Super Tuscan’ wines (based on Bordeaux grapes) have been produced. The 70 hectare property is owned by the Allegrini family, important producers of Valpolicella in the Veneto.
The temperate coastal climate seems to produce Bordeaux-style wines with more ripeness and charm than one would expect elsewhere in Italy. This is a clear example of that style, at a relatively sensible price!
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Matured in French oak (half new) for 18 months
We have held this in the cellar for 4 years – it is just now reaching perfect maturity.
“Aromas of black currant and a whiff of bell pepper slowly emerge on this hearty blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Concentrated and robust, the palate offers cassis, black cherry, licorice and the heat of evident alcohol alongside big velvety tannins.” Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast
