2016 Now finished: POLISH HILL RIESLING, Grosset. Clare Valley, Australia

Bin:  116

Alcohol percentage:  13%

Area:

Established in 1981, the winery is situated in the historic township of Auburn at the southern tip of the Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide.
Polish Hill vineyard is located at the foot of Mt Horrocks, at 460m, on rocky soils which produce low yields but high quality.

Grape variety:

100% Riesling, fermented very simply in stainless steel – no tricks!

Producer:

As he celebrates his thirtieth vintage in 2010, Jeffrey Grosset is acknowledged as the master of Aussie Riesling. Most famous for this, the ‘Polish Hill’, which always needs several years to reach maturity. We also sometimes list (and can always get hold of) his most drinkable and approachable wine, the ‘Springvale’ Watervale Riesling.

Maturity potential:

Drinkable young but will improve for 20 years.

Old Bridge rating:

Press review:

“Grosset’s most recognisable wine, Polish Hill is a fabulous example of Clare Valley Riesling. It has a slightly confected pear drop nose that leads into a succulent intensity of cooking apple and lime juice, joined by a noticeable freshness. There is a soft, luxurious mouthfeel but the razor sharp acidity counterbalances. A long, defined finish.” Decanter Magazine
