2013 CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA, Rancia, Fèlsina Berardenga. Tuscany
Alcohol Percentage: 14.5%
Area: Fèlsina is based at the small town of Castelnuovo Berardenga, on the southern border of Chianti Classico (just east of Siena). It is the warmest part of Classico and looks out southwards towards Montalcino. The style is bigger, broader and a little more like a Brunello than the fresher Chianti styles of Isole e Olena, Fontodi etc. The farm is 500 hectares, but less than 100 are vineyards.
Grape Variety: 100% Sangiovese, aged for 18 months in a mixture of small and large French oak barrels.
Producer: Giuseppe Mazzocolin ran Fèlsina Berardenga for 40 years, using the full scope of his intellectual and philosophical talents (in 'real life' he is an academic). To visit Giuseppe was to learn not just about the wines of Fèlsina, but also about its culture, its light, its history, its soul. He has now handed over day to day management to the talented Andrea Bonivento. The consultant winemaker remains Franco Bernabei.
Rancia is a 6 hectare single vineyard (once a separate farm within the Felsina Esate) just inside the Classico zone.
Cellar Potential: At its best 2019-2025.
Food Match: Rancia at this age is great with guinea fowl, pheasant or with a slow-roast (shoulder of lamb or pork).
Old Bridge Rating: Rancia is a beautiful vineyard and produces brilliant wine - but wine that needs time (about this length of time) and requires patience once opened. Then enjoy the tea leaf and cigar aromas, the solid but supple texture and the exceptional length of flavour.
Press Reviews: "The 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a dark, moody and sophisticated wine. It does not reveal itself immediately or in any obvious way. Instead, it doses out its intensity in careful measurements. The whole performance is seductive to say the least. That slow momentum leads to dark cherry with spice, grilled herb, wet earth and dried rose. Felsina's Riserva Rancia is a very elegant wine, both on the nose and in the mouth." The Wine Advocate
