2017 SYRAH, Casas del Bosque. Casablanca Valley, Chile
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: Casablanca Valley was Chile's first cool-climate area, making its name for crisp and elegant Sauvignon Blanc. A few producers have now planted Syrah on the best hillside vineyards - and are turning out wine that justifies the description 'Syrah' rather than Shiraz.
Grape Variety: 100% Syrah, matured for 12 months in French oak (around half new oak).
Producer: Large (245 hectares) but high quality family-owned producer in the west of Casablanca. Quality was improved by Kiwi winemaker Grant Phelps for several years, who in 2017 passed the baton to Meinard Bloom and Alberto Guolo, with the help of consultant Sam Harrop MW.
Cellar Potential: Now - 2023.
Food Match: Much easier to drink with or without food than many other serious reds in this section. Has the freshness to counterbalance a full-flavoured casserole.
Old Bridge Rating: Lovely balance of new world purity and ripeness with fresh, aromatic, complex character.
Press Reviews: Decanter Magazine: "Very ripe aromas. Spicy with blueberries, liquorice, smoked meat, notes of undergrowth and black olives."
