2016 TOKAJI LATE HARVEST, Oremus. Hungary (Half bottle)
Alcohol Percentage: 12%
Size of bottle: 37.5cl
Grape Variety: 50% Furmint, 30% Harslevelu, 15% Zeta, 5% Muscat de Lunel; 6 months in 136 litre Hungarian oak barrels. (Approx 115g/l residual sugar).
Producer: Oremus is owned and run by Vega Siclia, Spain's greatest winery. Classic Tokaji is made by adding buckets of heavily botrytised ('Aszu') grapes to the fresh grape must to make an intense, luscious wine. This inexpensive Cuvée is slightly different as the grapes (about 80% 'botrytis') are all fermented together.
Cellar Potential: May not improve but will certainly stay fresh for 10 years. No hurry to drink up.
Food Match: Versatile pudding wine. Not rich enough for sticky, traditional puddings but will stand up to most others. At its best with dishes containing orange or lemon.
Old Bridge Rating: Much lighter than serious (and expensive) Tokay Aszu, but with lovely marmalade tanginess.
Press Reviews: “Oremus is responsible for some of the sleekest and most elegant modern new-wave Tokajis to come from the historic Hungarian region. This is a glorious confection of finely oaked, rich marmaladey intensity with undertones of dried apricot, honey and raisin, all beautifully balanced by the typical acidity of the Furmit grape, which is very much the hallmark of the style.” (Anthony Rose – The Independent)
