Italian; Tuscan varieties - VIGNA DEL SORBO, Chianti Riserva, Fontodi. Tuscany, Italy

2004 VIGNA DEL SORBO, Chianti Classico Riserva, Fontodi. Tuscany

Bin: 735
Alcohol Percentage: 14%
Area: Fontodi is in Panzano, a small village in the very centre of Chianti Classico, the beautiful rolling hills between Florence and Siena. Fontodi's vineyards are all in the prime area, the 'Conca d'Oro' (golden shell)
Grape Variety: 80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak for 15 months
Producer: Giovanni Manetti's family have owned the estate since 1969, investing the money made from their terracotta factory nearby. Everything Giovanni does is meticulously planned to ensure the highest possible quality - rarely have I met such a professional operator (in the best possible sense) in the wine world. All his vineyards are now organic and he is doing trials with biodynamics.
Vigna del Sorbo is a single vineyard wine, blending the indigenous Sangiovese with a small proportion of Cabernet.
Cellar Potential: 2014-2024
Press Reviews: 95 Points, Wine Advocate -
"The 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo is an explosive wine endowed with a layered, sumptuous expression of sweet dark fruit. Menthol, licorice and floral overtones develop in the glass, adding further complexity. This stunningly beautiful wine offers tremendous persistence yet it will require patience as its structural components are formidable. I tasted the Vigna del Sorbo several times, including alongside Felsina’s Riserva Rancia, consulting oenologist Franco Bernabei’s other top-notch Riserva. Both wines were exceptional, but the Vigna del Sorbo showed a touch more freshness typical of wines from Panzano. Simply put, 2004 is a phenomenal vintage for this wine. Vigna del Sorbo is made from 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon which was grafted onto the rootstocks of the white varieties that were previously planted in the vineyard. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024"
